The short answer is yes, but whether it's positive or negative depends on several factors.

Please reach out to us before making address changes so our team can review the proposed updates and provide you with additional guidance.

Always ensure you are following best practices and Google guidelines will ensure that your business is not at risk of future potential rank penalties, or even a suspension or removal.

Representing your business online with accurate and up-to-date information is important. If your business moves, it's important to update the address. The impact of changing your address depends on several factors including 1) how far your new address is from your service area, and 2) how far your new address is from the old one

To ensure that updating your address goes as smoothly as possible here are the steps that must be completed:

  1. Update the address on your webpage(s) first
  2. Add/update the schema data and test it with Google's structural data testing tool
  3. Update your Google Business Profile address
  4. Update major data providers, top directories, and niche directories
  5. Update your other records including business and insurance documents (recommended)

Please note that on Google Business Profile the address is not always moved automatically. Google may ask you to re-verify your information by sending a new postcard to your new location.

In most cases, you may experience a bit of a rank fluctuation while the changes take place. This can last several days and depends on how quickly and smoothly the changes are completed.

In some cases, you may experience a rank drop. For example, if your previous location was in the center of your service area and your new address was moved to another city. This drop can occur because the proximity to the searcher plays a role in your ranking. Locations further away and outside of your main service area will not rank as well as having your location in the center of your main service area.  The impact of the change varies on individual circumstances.

You will also in most cases be required to provide a video verification using the Google Business Profile app from your mobile device.

Please also note that in most cases, Google tends to favour businesses that display their physical address on their Google Business Profile listing.
